I started this piece in the usual abstract prophetic fashion, pressing into the painting until it speaks to me and I “see” the message. It was a stretching experience as I stuck with it painting in the wee hours of the morning. At times feeling doubtful about the outcome. The process began with the ba
ckground, the blue swirling and then the light opening up in the middle. The rock emerged and became the focal point, followed by the Lord Jesus draped over the rock. I struggled to get the positioning just right and was pleased with the final result. If you look carefully you can see the suggestion of the droplets of blood on his face. The experience of painting this piece was not unlike the experience of some seasons of prayer. Pressing through the pain and loneliness and the general sense of “is this accomplishing anything” to the place of breakthrough. Sometimes, it would be so much easier just to go back to bed.
Matthew 26:36-40 The Passion Translation (TPT)
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
36 Then Jesus led his disciples to an orchard called “The Oil Press.”[a] He told them, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 He took Peter, Jacob, and John with him.[b] However, an intense feeling of great sorrow plunged his soul into deep sorrow and agony. 38 And he said to them, “My heart is overwhelmed and crushed with grief. It feels as though I’m dying. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
39 Then he walked a short distance away, and overcome with grief, he threw himself facedown on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if there is any way you can deliver me from this suffering,[c] please take it from me. Yet what I want is not important, for I only desire to fulfill your plan for me.” Then an angel from heaven appeared to strengthen him.[d]
40 Later, he came back to his three disciples and found them all sound asleep. He awakened Peter and said to him, “Do you lack the strength to stay awake with me for even just an hour?
- Matthew 26:36 Or “Gethsemane,” which means “oil press.” This was located on the lower slope of the Mount of Olives near the brook Kidron. King David left Jerusalem weeping as he crossed the Kidron Valley and went up the Mount of Olives (2 Sam. 15:23). Now the Son of David comes into that valley with great sorrow on his way into Jerusalem to be crucified. Kidron comes from the Hebrew verb qadar, which means “to grow dark” or “to mourn.”
