Canada Arise began during the trucker convoy in Ottawa in 2022, in a season when Canada felt burdened, divided, and under heavy pressure. I remember standing on the bridges as the trucks came through and seeing people wave them on with Canadian flags. There was a sudden sense of courage, unity, and release, as though something in the nation was waking up. Families gathered, people came together in hope, and even in the middle of conflict there was a feeling that Canada might yet rise into freedom and renewal.
As I painted, I wanted to hold that atmosphere: couples, families, gathering, movement, and a nation reaching toward light. The trees on the horizon gradually opened into another meaning, and when a friend remarked that they recalled the healing leaves of Scripture, they became part of the painting’s prophetic language. I eventually turned them into rising forms...hot-air balloons, and the title came with them: Canada Arise.
When the convoy was crushed and the hope of that moment seemed to collapse, I set the painting aside unfinished. I returned to it in 2025 with a strong sense that it needed to be completed before the federal election, as hope once again rose that Canada might break free from a long season of decline. The result was deeply disappointing for many, and the struggle not to give up on the nation remains very real.
Yet this painting refuses despair. It carries my conviction that God has not finished with Canada, that He still has purposes for this nation, and that even in a time of shaking, there remains a call to rise in unity, courage, and hope. It is a picture of Canada under pressure, but also of Canada being summoned upward into the destiny of God.
