Egypt began after an unexpected encounter with the atmosphere of that nation, and from the first moments of painting it I sensed that the work was important. At the time, I still associated Egypt mainly with Exodus, Pharaoh, and oppression. But later, through Isaiah 19, I began to see Egypt differently: not only as a biblical symbol of bondage, but as part of God’s redemptive purpose in the Middle East. That changed how I understood the painting. What first felt mysterious became clear over time. This work now reads to me as a painting of depth, memory, and destiny — a reminder that even places long associated with darkness can still stand within the reach of God’s purposes.
