Summary
Oil Lamps 555 is a square open-edition fine art print by Anne Reid Artist, presented as a 2025 artist-directed print-state edition drawn from the 2016 original acrylic on canvas painting Oil Lamps. Two humble clay lamp bowls sit in the foreground, each with its own steady flame rising into a shared circular aureole of light against a deep indigo and warm gold field. The composition carries a sense of watchfulness, readiness, and the quiet moment just before dawn — rooted in the parable of the wise virgins who kept their lamps trimmed and full.
Artwork Statement
I painted Oil Lamps with the sense of provision already made. The lamps are not being lit in a rush — they are already burning. Two flames rise and join within one circle of light, suggesting both individual readiness and shared anticipation. This work carries the discipline of remaining attentive: tending what has been entrusted, staying full, and waiting with purpose.
The surrounding darkness is not threatening. It is simply the context in which light proves faithful.
Variation & Edition Notes
Oil Lamps 555 is a 2025 artist-directed print-state edition prepared from the same 2016 original acrylic on canvas painting Oil Lamps, 36×24 in. The original landscape painting has been presented here in a square format with a border treatment, isolating the central lamp and aureole composition. The original painting remains in the artist’s private collection and is not for sale.
Collectors who want the full landscape composition may also consider Oil Lamps, print.
Color & Mood
- Deep indigo and charcoal form the surrounding field — still, watchful, and held.
- Warm gold and amber define the twin flames and the aureole of light.
- Rich burnt sienna and terracotta give the clay bowls weight and earthly presence.
- Violet undertones in the background carry quiet spiritual depth.
- The overall mood is contemplative, expectant, and quietly luminous.
Design Notes
- The square format centers the composition and gives the aureole room to breathe.
- Two lamp bowls overlap in the lower left, drawing the eye upward toward the joined flames.
- The circular halo acts as the visual and spiritual anchor of the work.
- Translucent layering builds depth without clutter — earth below, light above.
- The palette pairs naturally with deep jewel tones, warm neutrals, dark wood, and linen.
Where It Works
- Prayer corners and reflection spaces where watchfulness and readiness matter.
- Bedrooms and studies where a steady, contemplative presence is wanted.
- Living rooms that favor depth and warmth over brightness.
- Hospitality and retreat interiors with rich, layered palettes.
- Gallery walls where a square format anchors a multi-work arrangement.

Print Options & Materials
- Paper for a classic fine art presentation behind glass.
- Canvas for a soft, low-glare surface with painterly presence.
- Metal for a modern, luminous finish with strong durability.
- Acrylic for depth, clarity, and a polished contemporary edge.
Bathroom Suitability
For humid bathrooms and spa-style spaces, Metal or Acrylic are the strongest choices. Paper prints should be fully framed with glazing and placed only in well-ventilated bathrooms.

Integrity Notes
Oil Lamps 555 is a 2025 artist-directed print-state edition prepared from Anne Reid Artist’s 2016 original acrylic on canvas painting Oil Lamps, 36×24 in. The original landscape painting has been presented in a square format with a border treatment for this edition. The original painting remains in the artist’s private collection and is not for sale.
The print image is drawn from the same outdoor photograph used for Oil Lamps, print. Natural sunlight reflecting off the painting’s gloss varnish during that outdoor photography session produced the warm gold and bronze tones visible in the image. This color temperature difference from the studio photograph is the result of natural light and surface reflection — not a digital recoloring, composite, or AI-generated alteration. No synthetic elements were added.

Notes from the Studio
Two lamps. Two flames. One circle of light. The square format came later — an idea that the composition might work well presented this way in the right space. But the image itself comes from the same photograph as Oil Lamps: the one taken outdoors, where the sunlight caught the gloss varnish and left a glow on the wall behind the lamps that I didn’t see until I got home.
The lamp was already full. The light just arrived.
“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.”
Matthew 25:1–3, New International Version
