Acrylic on canvas, unframed

"Ruth" by Anne Reid is a captivating fine art print inspired by the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. This vibrant piece features striking ultramarine blue and orange hues, evoking a sense of warmth and vitality. In the foreground, a woman is depicted carrying a basket, symbolizing Ruth's dedication and commitment to supporting her family. Behind her, workers can be seen engaged in their tasks, adding depth and context to the scene. In the far background, a distant figure observes, suggesting the presence of Boaz, a key character in the story. Reid's skillful composition and use of color bring this timeless narrative to life, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of loyalty, resilience, and redemption.

So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.  She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.

Summary

In Ruth square, print, Anne Reid Artist centers the gleaning field story in a radiant square composition. The figure of Ruth stands steady among baskets and workers, framed by bold cobalt blues and a blazing orange sky that hints at both hardship and hope. This cropped edition focuses the viewer on Ruth’s courage and provision while preserving the atmosphere of movement across the field.

Artwork Statement

I painted Ruth as a meditation on loyalty, courage, and provision. The figure stands in the middle of the field between emptiness and abundance, holding a single basket that represents both risk and trust. Behind her, the community of gleaners moves steadily through the harvest while the sky burns with color, suggesting that God is already at work in the unseen.

For this square edition, I drew the viewer closer to Ruth herself. Cropping the original canvas lets you stand almost shoulder to shoulder with her, feeling the weight of the day and the quiet resolve in her stance. It is a picture of staying faithful in the field you’ve been given, even when the outcome is not yet clear.

I imagine this piece encouraging anyone who is “in between” seasons—still gathering, still walking, still believing that harvest is coming. The colors are vivid and contemporary, but the story is ancient and enduring.

Color & Mood

  • Deep cobalt and ultramarine blues in the field suggest steadiness, night watches, and prayer.
  • Intense orange and magenta in the sky carry a sense of breakthrough, sunrise, and burning devotion.
  • Warm ochres and umbers in the baskets echo the color of grain and everyday earthiness.
  • Soft whites in Ruth’s apron and skirt bring purity, humility, and a focal point of calm.
  • Overall mood: hopeful, resilient, and quietly determined—holding on to promise in the middle of work.

Design Notes

  • Square crop (1:1 aspect) that brings Ruth forward as the primary focal point while still hinting at the field narrative.
  • A strong diagonal horizon line leads the eye from the distant gleaners toward Ruth and her basket.
  • Vertical posture of the figure stabilizes the composition against the sweeping motion of the sky and water-like field.
  • Repeating circles and cylinders of the baskets create rhythm and a subtle path into the scene.
  • Textural paint in the sky and field adds movement, suggesting wind, prayer, and unseen activity around her.

Where It Works

  • Living room feature wall where a square, story-rich piece can anchor a seating area.
  • Dining room or breakfast nook as a reminder of daily bread, gratitude, and shared provision.
  • Home office or studio for encouragement during long, unseen seasons of work.
  • Prayer room or quiet corner as a visual meditation on faithfulness in the field.
  • Church foyer, counseling room, or ministry office that walks people through transition and new beginnings.
  • Hospitality spaces—boutique hotels, retreat centers, guest suites—where guests are welcomed and cared for.

Pairing Ideas

  • Pair with Ruth Harvest 5, print to extend the harvest narrative—Ruth’s field on one wall, the full sheaf of grain on another.
  • Hang alongside Ruth & Boaz, print to trace the storyline from gleaning to covenant, perfect for a hallway or counseling space.
  • Add Glory Stream 3, print for a more abstract, flowing counterpoint that echoes the same cobalt-and-fire palette.
  • For a cosmic, prophetic touch, include The Apple 3, print , bringing the “apple of His eye” imagery into the Ruth series grouping.

Further Reading

For a deeper dive into how I approach visually praying through Scripture and story, you can explore my article “What Is Prophetic Art?” on the site. It unpacks how pieces like Ruth square, print are conceived, prayed through, and brought to completion.

Print Options & Materials

  • Fine art paper: Soft, tactile surface with archival inks—ideal for framing with mat and glazing.
  • Canvas gallery wrap: Ready-to-hang, painterly feel that echoes the original brushwork.
  • Metal print: Sleek, contemporary presentation with luminous color—excellent for modern living rooms and offices.
  • Acrylic face-mount: High-gloss depth and clarity that makes the saturated sky and blues glow.

Bathroom suitability

Ruth square, print can work beautifully in a powder room or ensuite. For higher-humidity spaces I recommend metal or acrylic, while framed paper under glass is best for well-ventilated bathrooms and small prayer nooks.

Sizing Guidance (1:1 square aspect)

This artwork is offered as a 1:1 square print. Current size options on this page are:

  • 12 x 12 in – intimate size for a prayer corner, desk wall, or small gallery grouping.
  • 20 x 20 in – balanced choice for above a chair, console, or bedside table.
  • 24 x 24 in – versatile size for most living rooms, offices, or entry walls.
  • 30 x 30 in – statement square for over a sofa or in a dining room.
  • 36 x 36 in – bold focal point for larger walls, church foyers, and hospitality spaces.

As a general rule, choose a width that is about 60–75% of the furniture below it, and aim to hang the center of the artwork around 57–60 inches from the floor.

Quality & Care

  • Printed by a professional fine art lab using archival inks and substrates.
  • Each piece is made to order and inspected for color accuracy and finish quality.
  • Display out of direct, prolonged sunlight to help preserve color over time.
  • Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth; avoid household cleaners or abrasive materials.
  • Use appropriate wall anchors and hang securely, especially for larger sizes.

Collector Reflections

Collectors often tell me that Ruth’s stance feels both vulnerable and strong—like someone who has chosen to keep showing up when it would be easier to turn back. Many place this piece where they see it every morning, as a reminder to keep gleaning, keep praying, and keep trusting that the field they are standing in is not the end of the story.

Integrity Notes

The original painting Ruth is an acrylic on canvas, 16 x 20 in (inventory code ART-R-202310), created in 2023 and held as a studio original. Ruth, square print is an open edition fine art print produced from a high-resolution photograph of that painting. This edition is a 1:1 square crop that brings the central figure of Ruth and her baskets forward, trimming some of the far left and right edges of the original field and sky while preserving the core narrative. Colors have been gently balanced for print (contrast, saturation, and sharpness) but no new painted elements have been added or removed. The print faithfully represents the texture, brushwork, and story of the original while offering a square format for contemporary interiors.
