Summary
Advent is an original abstract painting by Anne Reid Artist exploring the mystery of prophecy, time, and the incarnation of Christ. Through a restrained composition of deep blues, a luminous circular form, and subtle symbolic gestures, the work reflects the moment when the prophetic word becomes reality. The painting invites the viewer to step outside linear time and consider history from the perspective of the One who is the Alpha and the Omega.
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel...
Isaiah 7:14, The New International Version
Artwork Statement
I began this painting working in a prophetic abstract style, applying color in an intuitive and prayerful way that allows the composition to emerge gradually. As the painting develops, I step back and look for the forms that begin to reveal themselves within the movement of color and light.
In Advent, a subtle dark stroke on the left suggests the presence of the prophets of the Old Testament—those who spoke the word of God long before its fulfillment. For them, the coming of Christ was still in the future.
At the center of the composition, a warm orange glow suggests the moment of incarnation—the mystery of the virgin conception when, as Isaiah foretold, the promised child entered history. The surrounding circular form functions on two levels: it evokes both the wheel of time and the womb itself.
The white flash near the upper right suggests the star over Bethlehem, while the angled darker stroke above the center hints at the cave of the shepherds’ field where Christ was born. These elements appear almost hidden within the abstraction, emerging only slowly as the viewer spends time with the work.
The painting therefore holds several perspectives of time simultaneously: the eternal perspective of God who sees the end from the beginning, the prophetic voice speaking of what is yet to come, and the human viewer looking back on events that have already taken place. The work invites the viewer to contemplate the moment where the spoken word becomes living reality.
