Artwork Statement

I painted Shelter around the movement of ascending — not the arrival, but the straining through. The storm in this painting is real. The waters are real. The bird is using everything it has to rise above the field of turbulence and break through into the light above.

The theology behind this work comes from three places that belong together. Isaiah 43:2 says you will pass through the waters and not be swept away, through the fire and not be burned — God is present in the storm, not just above it. Isaiah 40:31 says those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength and mount up with wings like eagles. And Isaiah 25:4 names where the ascending leads: God as a shelter from the storm, a refuge for the helpless, a defense in distress.

The bird in this painting is ascending toward that shelter. It is not resting yet. It is rising.

Color & Mood

Palette: cool blue-gray, white, pale aqua, slate, and scattered blue. Mood: striving, ascending, turbulent below and open above. The lower field carries the energy of storm — cold spatter, churning movement, dense gray — while the upper portion opens into softer white light. The aqua break in the center reads as a moment of opening, a breath of passage between the storm and the shelter above.

Design Notes

The bird form in the upper left is small against the storm field, which makes the ascending movement feel earned rather than effortless. The composition moves upward — from the dense, dark lower field through the scattered middle zone into the open upper light — giving the image a strong vertical reading even within its near-square format. The cool palette keeps the image from feeling heavy; the white and aqua carry light through the turbulence. This print works at distance as an atmospheric field and reveals the ascending bird and the storm's layered detail up close.

Where It Works

Bedrooms, prayer spaces, and reading corners where the image can be lived with quietly over time are natural placements. Living rooms and entries where a work of quiet spiritual strength is needed also suit this print well. It belongs in counseling rooms, wellness spaces, and reflective interiors where the theology of passing through — not around — difficulty is meaningful. The cool palette works with white, gray, soft blue, and natural wood interiors.
