Summary
Fourth Man, print is an open-edition fine art print by Anne Reid Artist, based on the 2018 original painting Fourth Man. Four dark human silhouettes stand within a blazing circular furnace of orange, crimson, and gold — three who are tested, and one who is with them. The work carries immediate narrative clarity while pointing to Christ's presence in suffering: nearness, not distance; peace held inside the fire.
Artwork Statement
I painted Fourth Man in the community studio in Oakville. Like most of my work, it started abstractly. I was not trying to illustrate a Bible story. I was working the paint in circles — applying it, scraping it back, going around and around the surface again and again.
The physical movement of making the painting became part of the meaning. The circular marks created something that felt like a vortex, a cave, or a furnace — the orange and pink light burning from the center, darker colors circling around it. As I looked into the painting, I began to see small figures emerging in the center of the orange space. I highlighted them, and then added a touch of gold to the fourth figure so the story would become clear.
That is when the painting connected for me with the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — the three men thrown into Nebuchadnezzar's fiery furnace, and the mysterious fourth man who appears with them in the fire.
A dear friend was on my mind the entire time I painted this. I was holding her in prayer as I worked — thinking of her, praying for her, carrying her in my heart through every circle of the brush.
Years later I understood something I had not seen at the time. That friend had, in the years since I painted this, gone through a very severe personal fire — a furnace season. And she was coming out the other side. I had thought I was simply painting and praying. But perhaps, in some way, I was also praying into a fire I could not yet see.
The story in Daniel is not only that God preserved the three men in the furnace. It is also that when they came out, they did not even smell like smoke. Their bindings were burned away, but they themselves were not destroyed. That is the part that feels so powerful to me now. The fire did not consume them. It freed them.
Fourth Man is about the presence of Christ in the fire. It is about warfare, deliverance, and the mystery of God being with people in the very place meant to destroy them. It is about coming through suffering without being defined by it. It is about the bindings burning away while the person remains alive, protected, and free.
Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, Your Majesty." He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." (Daniel 3:24–25, NIV)
Color & Mood
- Incandescent orange-gold central orb — the furnace, the presence, the light that does not consume
- Blazing crimson and magenta spiral field — fire, trial, and intensity
- Teal-cyan accents in the outer rough field — something beyond the fire; the unseen realm
- Dark silhouettes — human figures held inside rather than overwhelmed
- Overall mood: resolute, protective, hope-filled; intense without losing peace
Design Notes
- Vertical 3:4 composition with a strong circular centripetal structure — concentric arcs draw the eye inward toward the hot core
- Orange-gold central orb radiates outward through bands of pink, crimson, and violet — heat rendered as motion, not architecture
- Teal-cyan accents in the outer turbulent field — beyond the fire, the unseen realm
- Four figures held small against the radiance — the body as measure, not spectacle
- The fourth presence distinguished by tonal value alone — lighter, thinner, slightly offset; presence before story
- Heavy impasto surface texture — scrubbed, scumbled, and dragged in arcs; the center pushes forward, the outer rings resist
- Reads boldly at a distance; rewards sustained looking at closer range

Notes from the Studio
This painting came from a place of intercession — watching people I love go through fire and witnessing the faithfulness of God in it. The fourth figure is the whole point. He is always there. And when God brings someone out, they can come out freer than when they went in.
